Ten Gigathletes flew to Cancun in Mexico on 13 November 2017 in order to test a variety of Gigathlon courses together with the local franchise partner. Among those taking part were Single male Gigathletes, one Single female Gigathlete and Jan Plachy, the organiser of the Gigathlon Czech Republic.

Once there, the group of travellers from Switzerland were treated to a complete package of services ñ all transfers, rental bikes and even lockers for a change of clothing were provided. The swimming courses were marked with large buoys and secured by canoeists.

It all started with the Gigathlon song and the tinkling of a cowbell as the sun rose over a Caribbean beach in a setting reminiscent of a travel brochure. The swimming courses in turquoise, crystal-clear water with views of the abundant variety of fish and coral were one of the highlights of the week. Runners took to the beach or ran on narrow paths through the jungle and down the busy main street of Playa del Carmen. The relatively flat mountain biking sections covered the parched chalky soil of a single bike track beaten into the virgin forest. Conditions on the island of Cozumel were ideal for the cycling and inline courses: the old road around the southern half of the island has been replaced by a new road running alongside and is blocked to motor vehicles ñ an ideal course with continuous sea views.

There was also enough time for a varied social programme, including a visit to Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and diving and swimming in the "cenotes" ñ crystal clear water holes, up to 20 m deep, in the middle of the jungle.
